Investment Performance Risk & Return - Deciding Which Are The Best Investments

Filed under: Investing In Markets — admin at 12:55 am on Monday, March 31, 2008

When may people look to invest, they simply look at the annual rate of return, however performance also needs to be seen in terms of risk - reward and comparisons need to be made in terms of how the investment is doing against others in its sector and how it compares to investments in other sectors.

This requires a bit of time, but is time well spent in terms of getting the best investments for you and how to combine them for optimum risk to reward.

Below you will find some ways of assessing the performance of an investment.

Use the tools below and you will be able to choose your investments better and maximize rates of return.
Draw downs and Peak to Valley Draw Downs

This is one of the most important areas for investors to look at. Although past performance is not a guide to future results it gives an indication of losing periods, their size and recovery.

A drawdown is simply a fall in value for an investment and gives an indication of downside losses that investors should be comfortable with. A peak to valley shows the worst period of return of an investment and is the one investors, should be prepared to expect.

Drawdowns, every investor hates them but all investments have them, so pick investments with drawdowns your comfortable with and always assume your worst drawdown is ahead of you.

Standard Deviation

The volatility of an investment is denoted by a statistical measure known as the standard deviation of the return rate.

Without going into complex mathematics, Just think of standard deviation as being synonymous with volatility. standard deviation therefore is applied to the annual rate of return of an investment to measure the investment’s volatility (risk).

The higher the standard deviation the more volatile the investment. Low standard deviation would be present in such areas as bank deposit accounts and bonds and high standard deviation in higher risk products such as leveraged futures and FOREX accounts.

Sharp Ratio

This risk-adjusted measure was developed by William F. Sharpe, by calculating standard deviation and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.

The higher the Sharpe ratio, the better the fund’s historical risk-adjusted performance.

Sortino Ratio

Similar to the Sharpe ratio and looks to differentiate between harmful volatility from volatility in general by replacing standard deviation with downside deviation in the calculation.

The Sortino Ratio is calculated by subtracting the risk free rate from the return of the portfolio and then dividing by the downside deviation. The Sortino ratio measures the return to “bad” volatility.

This ratio allows investors to assess risk in a better way than simply looking at excess returns to total volatility; it considers how often the price of the investment rises as opposed to how often it falls.

The bigger the Sortino Ratio is the lower the chances of large losses occurring.

Benchmarks

Benchmarks are a way of comparing investments so you can make meaningful comparisons within sectors and across sectors.
Two benchmarks are normally used:

1. Benchmark for Correlation Values: The benchmark that the fund has chosen to run correlation values such as alpha, beta, R and R squared.

2. Benchmark for Graphing: The benchmark that the investment has chosen to graph itself against as a comparison.

Beta

Beta is the measure of a fund’s volatility relative to the market. (most fund managers correlate themselves to the S&P 500). A beta of greater than 1.0 indicates that the fund is more volatile than the market, and less than 1.0 is less volatile than the market.

For example, if the market rises 1% and a fund has a beta greater than 3.8, the fund will rise, on average, 3.8%. For a fund with a beta of 0.5, if the market rises 1%, the fund will rise on average, 0.5%.

The relationship is exactly the same in a falling market. (Note that investments can have a negative beta, as well meaning that on average they rise when the market falls and vice versa.

A little research can pay big dividends

A little research using the above on your investments can pay big dividends in getting an investment portfolio that’s right for you and could give you better growth to drawdown.

What’s your prospecting personality?

Filed under: Business Success — admin at 10:42 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2008

“I hate prospecting,” a FCO subscriber complained to me last
week. “I know I have to make cold calls to get clients, but
every time I sit down at the phone I break out into a cold
sweat.”

“Then stop cold calling,” I said.

My answer surprised him. Perhaps it surprises you, too? After
all, aren’t you supposed to do some uncomfortable things to get
your name in front of potential clients?

Not necessarily.

It makes no sense to do something you hate, even if it works.
Because if you hate it, you won’t do it consistently. (And
consistency is the whole secret behind successful prospecting.)

Prospecting isn’t something you do just when business is slow.
It must be weaved indelibly into your business life, like doing
the books and reading the trades. You need to fish for new
clients monthly, weekly, or even daily. If you don’t, you’ll
become infinitely acquainted with the phrase: “Feast or famine”.

So how do you prospect regularly, without losing your mind? My
advice is to find a method that matches your personality.

In our business, there are four proven prospecting methods:

1. NETWORKING.

Do you like mingling? Schmoozing? Chatting people up?

Networking can be a very effective strategy. A corporate writer
I know built his business from the ground up primarily by
hanging out at business meetings and conferences.

“I get nervous initially when I attend a networking event,” he
told me recently. “That’s normal. But once I’ve introduced
myself to a couple of people, it becomes fun.”

If you have an outgoing personality, networking may be your
ticket. I suggest you pick events frequented by marketing
professionals rather than the general business crowd. You’ll get
better results.

2. WRITING.

This is a comfortable strategy for copywriters. After all, it’s
what we do best. Write.

There are many ways you can use words to reach potential
clients. Getting articles published in magazines, newsletters,
journals and e-zines are the most popular methods. You can also
write sales letters, press releases, special reports and even
ads.

Some top-tier magazines (Target Marketing, DM News, etc.) are
difficult to break into. But here’s a tip: If you can’t get in
the front door with your article, try the back door with a
“Letter to the Editor”. These are often easier to get published.

3. SPEAKING.

If you think you can’t speak before a group because you’re an
introvert, think again. It’s amazing how many so-called shy
people are professional speakers!

Speaking can be a powerful way to introduce your services to
potential clients. Think about it. If you speak before a group
of 50 marketing managers, you’ve just made 50 new contacts in
less than an hour! Better still, you’ve positioned yourself as a
go-to expert.

Bob Bly once told me, “Do it right and you always get a new
client from a speaking engagement.”

How do you get started? Put together a 30 minute presentation on
one or two topics related to your expertise. Then contact local
business groups and ask if they need speakers. For smaller
groups especially, you’ll be welcomed with open arms.

4. COLD CALLING.

Everyone says they hate cold calls. But they work. A recent
report by MarketingSherpa revealed that in business-to-business
prospecting, cold calls are the fastest way to reach and convert
new clients.

It may be the fastest, but it can be hard on the ego. When you
prospect by phone, you’ll hear a lot of No’s before you
eventually get a Yes. Most folks will try to brush you off. A
few may even hang up, rudely. It comes with the territory.

Still, many writers have used the phone very successfully. My
friend Chris Marlow, a highly successful software copywriter, is
a prime example.

Think prospecting by phone fits your personality? If so, I
suggest you read Stephan Schiffman’s TeleSales. It’s the best
book I’ve read on the subject.

So there you have it. Four top prospecting techniques. All work
extremely well. Pick one or two that you’ll enjoy doing most.
Then do it. And keep doing it. Never stop.

Film vs Digital

Filed under: Online Technology Resources — admin at 10:21 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2008

Film vs Digital

I was reading a piece the other day, written by a photographer
who offers both film and digital capture to his customers. I am
always interested to hear other professional photographer’s
opinions on the subject. I was a film devotee for over 30 years,
and only made the switch to digital a little over three years
ago.

In the piece I mentioned, the photographer/author sited the fact
that film is more ‘forgiving’ than digital when it comes to
proper exposure. This is certainly true. Especially in the
highlights of the image. You can overexpose negative film by
more than two stops, and still get details in the highlights.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with photo-geek speak, for
any given scene framed in the viewfinder of a camera, there is a
correct exposure to the light coming from the scene and onto the
film, or digital sensor. Over exposure by one “stop” means twice
as much light as should be getting to the film or sensor, is
getting to it. Two stops over is twice that much more, or four
times the amount of light as the correct exposure.

Do that to your digital capture and there’s no recovering data
from the highlights. Sorry, it’s gone! Actually, positive film,
or “slide” film also has a much lower tolerance to overexposure,
so not all film is that much more ‘forgiving’. But the point
here is… ta DA…”Forgiving”, (and may I finish the thought),
of bad exposure!

The author of the piece I refer to here also is a photographer
in Hawaii, as I am. He writes of how the light here changes so
quickly and frequently with the trade winds blowing the clouds
over the sun, then away from the sun, etc. And it is true that
on many days, especially in the earlier afternoons the
brightness and intensity of the sun can vary quite a bit.

Personally, my solution is, knowing that about the light and the
sun, clouds and trades, 1) be aware of it, and 2) know your
equipment so you can make rapid adjustments, and then, 3) make
the adjustments as needed!

Then there was the assertion that, “Prints made from negatives
have more ‘depth’ than prints made from digital files.”

As I mentioned, I was a film devotee for over 30 years. And I
used medium format cameras using negatives over 3 times the size
of 35mm negs. Print quality was one of the main factors that
kept me from converting to digital earlier than I did. I
insisted on seeing my own images printed digitally, that matched
the quality of the prints I was used to from my film processing
labs.

The simple truth is that prints are two-dimensional. Prints have
no depth. What creates the illusion of depth in an image are the
contrasts in the image. Shadows and highlights, perspective, and
the human mind. It is up to the photographer to shape, frame and
capture the elements that create the illusion of depth. That’s
why professional photographers create images, while others catch
snapshots.

The other evening at a meeting with some art directors, when I
was asked, “How do you feel about digital? Has the quality
caught up with film yet?” I unhesitatingly responded, “It has
caught and surpassed film!”

Of course I was speaking from the perspective of a professional
photographer. When you have a correctly exposed image, and you
use state of the art printers, you simply cannot beat digital
imaging. My big, medium format negative film prints would start
to get grainy at 30×40, but my 6 mega pixel digital images,
printed on Epson Stylus Pro printers look tack sharp at 40×55.

So, strictly on an image comparison, print to print, film and
digital, I would have to say there’s virtually no difference up
to about 16×20, or maybe 20×24. Larger than that, digital is
superior.

All this being said, visual arts are very subjective, and this
is my opinion.

Safety Training: The Need For Security

Filed under: Security — admin at 8:27 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2008

Safety training is something that every person in the world should have. Of course, this isn’t a logical option. So, that means that those who can have this type of training should have it. Safety training is not only about protecting you and your loved ones, but also the strangers that happen into your life. Because you just do not know when an accident will happen, you need to be prepared ahead of time. This is the most crucial part of safety training: getting it in time.

Safety training is more than just learning how to take care of a cut or a scrape. There are a number of different things that you will be needing to know how to do in your everyday life. For example, you may need to learn to help someone who is choking. You may need to help someone who has just fallen. You may also need to help someone who is having a heart attack or can no longer breath on their own.

Safety training can be taught through a variety of ways. For many people, it is taught through hospitals, doctor’s offices and through community centers. You can also find the training you need from organizations like the Red Cross. The point is not really where to get the training or what training to get, but to just get moving on it. Learn what you can so that you can help someone who is in need whenever it is needed.

Whether you need safety training for your job or because you realize the value in having it, there are many forms to learn. For example, you may learn what to do with chemicals or you may find out what is the best way to pick up a heavy box. On top of this, you will want to learn things that deal with your specific needs in the personal world such as food safety training. Safety training is necessary and helpful throughout lifes’ many adventures.

How to Drive Laser-Targeted Traffic - 7 Ways

How to Drive Laser-Targeted Traffic - 7 Ways that you can use,
and really benefit from.

As an affiliate marketer you may have all the attributes needed
to succeed. You may have the necessary drive, diligence and
perseverance to be able to understand how the system works. You
may even have all the tools necessary to maintain the business,
including a really unique and interesting website which could
earn you a fortune.

If only the whole world could see it!!

However, all the above would prove useless if you don’t know how
to drive traffic to your website. Your business would sink into
oblivion unless you knew how to actually drive traffic
effectivly.

Getting people to see your website is a difficult undertaking if
you consider that your rivals are waiting to cut your legs out
from under you. The immensity of the internet as well as the
affiliate marketing world, has given birth to fierce competition
between affiliate marketers, each of whom has his own great
product to offer.

With all the websites piling on top of each other, how would you
be able to stand out? Here are the seven best ways to drive
laser-targeted traffic to your own website.

1 - Know your market through and through.

It’s important for traffic to be targeted to those who have a
special interest in the theme or topic of your website. This
way, a solid customer base is going to be created. Once a
potential customer shows an interest in your website and your
newsletter, then don’t lose them by failing to provide great
information they’re looking for.

2 - The next step in driving traffic to your website is by
relying on search engines
and what they can do for the
affiliate marketer concerned. Because they are popular for
driving free targeted traffic, they should not be ignored by any
means. Having top search engine rankings is vital to building
popularity links, and the use of the right keywords is important
in attaining this goal. Once a website is on top of the list, it
is easily accessible to anyone who wants to find it for himself.

3 - The next step is link exchange Contact other
webmasters for a possible link exchange partnership. Locating
websites that are related to yours is the primary task. Once
there, you need to establish communication by personalizing your
communication with other webmasters. If you use a plain form
letter, it may not get read.

4 - The next step is through writing your own articles.
or at least posting releveant guest author’s articles on your
site. This is an effective way to promote a website, because
good content is what people are looking for.

If satisfied with the quality of your content, they will come
back for more. And what’s more powerful than repeat visitors who
have grown to trust you and your site. At the time of this
writing, Best Affiliate Products reached 330 pages of great
content. Search engine traffic is increasing daily, and people
are staying longer and reading more pages.

5 - The fifth is through joining affiliate programs.
Having affiliates to do the work means allowing them to
bring tons of traffic to the merchant’s website through their
promotion of his product. Increased sales would be realized as a
result, and both the affiliate and the seller will benefit.

6 - The next step is through joint ventures. This is one
of the most effective ways of promoting a product or a service.
Having a partner with a targetted list is beneficial to both
parties, as it allows them to reach a wide customer base in a
short amount of time.

7 - And finally, have a list of subscribers that you can
write to on a regular basis.
This is your most valuable
asset. The use of autoresponders to send out your personalized
newsletters is the best way of benefitting from your list.
Letting them know about new products and services through a
cleverly prepared regular newsletter is almost a guarantee of
success.

Traffic generating strategies are important in making your
affiliate marketing career surge forward. It’s always to your
advantage to plan your moves in whatever business you undertake.
This is particularly so in affiliate marketing. Once you know
how to get people to see what your site has to offer, then
you’re on the right track to affiliate gold.

Now it’s time to move forward, by taking action on these tips. 7
tips or 20 tips will achieve nothing until you act. Just do
it…now!

How the Web Works

Filed under: Web + More — admin at 2:15 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2008

Many people think the Internet and the web are the same thing.
In fact, the Internet is simply a global network of computers -
the web runs on top of the Internet, and makes it useful for us.
So how does the web work?

The Invention of the Web

The web was invented by a man named Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 -
that’s 20 years after the start of the Internet. People had been
trying to work out effective ways of sending information around
on the Internet for a while at that point (email was invented in
1971, for example), but there hadn’t been any systems that had
really harnessed the net’s potential.

The web changed everything. Berners-Lee’s big idea was to apply
the idea of links to the Internet: the web would be a mass of
pages that you could move between by clicking on links. He came
up with a format for these pages (HTML), and wrote the first web
browser to view them with, as well as the first web server for
sending them to other people’s web browsers.

Links might not seem like much now, but at the time they were
revolutionary. Imagine what the web would be like if you had to
keep typing long addresses every time you wanted to move from
one page to the next, or using long numbered menu systems that
work differently from one site to the next. Without the web,
having Internet access would be pretty useless.

Servers and Browsers

Any time you use a web browser (like Internet Explorer or
Mozilla Firefox), you’re using the web. How? Well, it works like
this:

1. You open your web browser, and it goes to your home page.
>From there, you can click links to other websites, or to other
parts of the same website. If your home page is a search engine,
then you can type in a search and click links in the search
results. If you know the address of a site you want to go to,
you can type it in, and then click more links from there to keep
going.

2. Each time you click a link, your browser looks at two things
about it: the name of the web server it links to, and the name
of the page it links to on that server. For example, the address
http://www.example.com/mypage.html’ tells the web browser to
get the page called mypage.html from the server at
www.example.com, using HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol). This
server is a real computer, connected to the Internet, that has
the page you want to read stored on its hard disk.

3. To find out where this server is, your web browser looks it
up using DNS (Domain Name System), which turns the text address
into a number. This IP (Internet Protocol) address consists of
four numbers between 0 and 255 - it looks like a phone number.
The Internet is set up to make it easy to find a server anywhere
in the world once you know its IP address, and it can easily
find the quickest route from your ISP (Internet Service
Provider) to the server, and establish communication. This whole
process, from DNS lookup to connection, will often take much
less than a second.

4. Your web browser then sends an HTTP request to that web
server, and the web server responds by sending back the HTML
(Hypertext Markup Language) code for that page. Your web browser
turns this code into a page that you can view. From there, you
can click more links to start the process over again.

Of course, all this is quite simplified: modern browsers and
servers send around much more than HTML code. You can use the
web to download anything now, from pictures to programs, but it
all works in basically the same way.

If something goes wrong somewhere in this process, then you’ll
get an error: ‘the page cannot be displayed’, for example,
usually means that the server’s name was wrong, or that it
doesn’t have the page you wanted. You might also see errors
saying that the server is currently too busy with other people’s
requests to respond, or that the page you wanted has moved. In
each case, the best thing to do is to follow the instructions on
the error page, which usually means checking the address and
trying again.

Hydroponics Gardening - An Introduction To Hydroponics Gardening For Beginners (part 4) Environment

Filed under: Universe Of Gardening — admin at 1:52 am on Sunday, March 30, 2008

THE BASICS OF HYDROPONICS.

The Success or Failure of Your Plants Depends On Their
Environment

The environment, or climate, in which your plants are grown is one of
the most important factors affecting your end results. The temperature
and humidity have to be right for the type of crop you are raising, the
lighting has to be of sufficient intensity and duration for the stage
your crop has reached. These and many other factors have to be
considered before you can hope to grow a healthy and productive crop.

Let’s look briefly at the various factors involved. Growing plants
indoors means that you have to create similar conditions to those
outside. This may seem obvious at first glance, but is it true? Ask
yourself what the advantages of Hydroponics gardening are. The outside
climate is very varied and does not always work to the plant’s advantage.
For example a bad storm or a late frost can damage or kill tender young
plants.

One of the major advantages of hydroponics gardening is that you can
control the climate within the grow room. This means that you can
supply your plants with the ideal conditions for their healthy growth,
throughout their lives. This ensures a good healthy yeild and a bigger
profit margin.

So what do you need?

Having decided upon which type of hydroponics system to use, you now need
to promote the right growing conditions. All healthy plants require a
good supply of water and balanced nutrients. They need the right kind of
light, for the right period of time, each day. Your plants will need some
kind of support for their structure, especially as they mature and grow
heavy with harvestable produce. Like outdoor plants they also need the
temperature to be within a certain range. Too cold and your plants will
not thrive, but remain poor stunted things. Too hot and they may well dry
out, then their leaves will wither and the plants die.

The addition of Carbon Dioxide gas (CO2) may be advisable to promote
Photosynthesis within the green leaves of your plants. Finally some form
of clean fresh air circulation is needed to ensure that your crop can
breathe. Like you, your plants need Oxygen for life. They breathe it in
through their tissues and like you, can become sick if it is dirty or
contaminated. So, taking these factors one at a time, how can we create
the optimum conditions for our plants?

Firstly water and a good supply of balanced nutrients are essential. Which
nutrient to buy and how to use it? This again is a major question to some
people. My advice to you would be to go with a nutrient that you can
understand and are comfortable using. As you gain experience and confidence
you can experiment with other methods and suppliers at will.

Lighting is another key area that seems to cause newcomers a problem. The
type of light and the number of daylight hours are determined by the species
of plants you are cultivating and their stage of development. Young
seedlings and cuttings, for example, need much softer light than do plants
about to flower. Equitorial plants will generally need a higher light
intensity for a longer period than will plants from the regions where
days and growing seasons are short. Ask your hydroponics supplier for help
in any of the areas you are unsure of. He will be pleased to assist you.

When looking at lighting you also need to take into account the area to be
covered and whether the lights are to be static or moving.

A Brief Word Of Warning.

Poor quality lighting systems can be very dangerous and accidents are more
likely to occur if the person who sets up the equipment is not particular
about safety. Always buy quality assured electrical equipment that carries
the safety mark for your country. Do not risk your life or the lives of
those you love just to save a few pounds or dollars.

IF IN DOUBT CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIAN

Plants can be supported in a variety of ways, by using frames and tying the
plant stems to them at regular intervals using plastic ties. Automatic reels
can be bought which makes the job a lot easier. They consist of a spring
loaded reel of cord with a hook arrangement that fixes to the ceiling, or a
top runner, and a hook or loop to tie to the top area of the plant stem. As
the plant grows so the slack in the cord is taken up by the reel. Depending
on your growing system the roots will either be supported or not. If no
support is used, for example in a water culture system, then the plant should
be supported at or near the base of the stem, to stop it lifting if reel
supports are used.

And so to the temperature control in your artificial climate. The optimum
temperature for your plants will again vary with both genus and species. Ask
your supplier what this should be. Now you will need devise a system to
maintain the temperature within the optimum top and bottom limits. This can
be achieved by either a series of fans and/or heaters together with various
other pieces of equipment such as timers, controllers, monitors and CO2 dosers,
or by a commercially produced environmental control system. These ready made
systems come in a variety of price options designed to suit almost every pocket.
In general, the more you are prepared to spend, the more sophisticated
the systems that are available to you.

Fresh air requirements for your grow room are normally provided using a fan
assisted ducting system . This introduces clean air from the outside, via a
filter to remove impurities. An Ozone generator is often used to improve the
supply of oxygen and neutralize any noxious odours. Another similar ducting
system then extracts the dirty air back to the outside, again via a filter to
remove impurities and cut down on unwelcome odours. Humidifiers can be used,
if needed, to increase the amount of airborne water vapour.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms: Prostate Treatment, Radiation, and More

Filed under: Medical Management — admin at 12:26 am on Sunday, March 30, 2008

How common is Prostate Cancer and what are the Symptoms? Prostate Cancer Symptoms can be hard to detect but it helps to know what you are looking for. In this article Prostate Cancer Symptoms: Prostate Treatment, Radiation and more, my goal is to briefly introduce you to Prostate Cancer so that you have an outline of important information if you ever find yourself, or someone you love in this situation.

How common is Prostate Cancer? How do I know if I have prostate cancer? These are very important questions. Prostate Cancer is the second most common form of cancer in men and is usually found in men over 50 years of age. The best protection you can offer yourself from this life threatening disease, is to arm yourself with the knowledge that will help you to detect it early on. The faster you pick up on these Symptoms, the better off you will be.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms:

-Difficulty starting to pass urine

-Weak or intermittent flow of urine

-Dribbling of urine before and after urinating

-Frequent or urgent need to pass urine

-Need to get up several times in the night to urinate

-Bladder never feels completely empty

-Occasionally finding blood in the urine

One of the most common symptoms listed above is the difficulty starting to pass urine, but keep your eye out for the others. If you have any of these symptoms for prostate cancer, you should see a qualified doctor as soon as possible.

Most of the time if the cancer has not spread, treatment with Radiation Therapy will be the recommended procedure. Another common form of treatment is Radical Prostatectomy. This procedure involves having the whole prostate and its dependent parts removed. This is a very intense operation and is only recommended for those in good health. Doctors also commonly recommend hormone therapy to help suppress your testosterone levels. This will slow down the division process of the cancer. Hormone therapy can be used alone or with other procedures like radiation treatment.

Chemotherapy uses chemicals to kill cancer cells, but Chemotherapy is only used when the cancer has spread past the prostate. The drugs used in chemotherapy are administered on an outpatient basis and do not typically require a hospital stay. I defiantly recommend researching the various treatment options in depth as the topic is worthy of a relatively large book.

(UTS) How Stops Help You To Make Money In The Stock Market

Filed under: Templates Hub — admin at 11:37 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008

To make money in the stock market, setting stops is an imprecise
science and involves a lot of trial and error, but it is an
integral part of being a successful trader. A good analogy is to
compare stops to buying insurance for your business. Should you
avoid insurance altogether just because you’re not sure exactly
how much you need, or because it will cost you a little money?
No. Instead, you estimate and do the best you can, and in the
end it will be well worth the effort.

Where insurance limits risk of loss through disasters, stops
limit your risk of loss on bad trades. Stops make it possible to
take small losses and get out when a stock goes against you,
protecting your capital. Yet, some traders find that they are
unwilling to take a loss on any stock. They don’t want to admit
that they made a mistake.

Another key to make money in the stock market, what often
separates a good trader from a bad one is the ability to take
small losses. Your goal, as a successful trader, is to take
small losses and make big gains. If you do this, you’ll be
profitable. But, you ask, what if you stop out of a stock you
still want to trade? Well, you can always buy it back later, and
likely at a better price, if the trade still has potential.

Besides limiting risk and helping you take small losses, stops
are valuable because they protect profits on winning trades. As
I discussed in a previous article, you must lock in your profit
when you trade, or you can lose it. You can ensure that you keep
your profits by using trailing stops. A trailing stop is a stop
order you place below the current price of a long position,
progressively moving it up as the price of the position
increases so that the stop follows the position up. For a short
position, to make money in the stock market you set a stop above
the current price and then move it progressively down, following
the position as it trends downward.

This means that once you have a profit, you move your stop
nearer to the current price so you’ll stop out with most of your
profits intact if the position moves against you. If the stop
executes and you decide you want to trade the position again,
you can buy it back at a better price than you sold it for and
then ride it up again. That’s how a good trader makes and keeps
money, make money in the stock market by taking small profits
multiple times, rather than risking too much waiting for a big
win.
