Five Surprising Reasons We Gain Weight
There are many, many factors that cause weight gain. Here are 5 startling ways we gain weight, aside from the calories in/calories out theory.
Too little essential fatty acids in our diet. Essential fatty acids, also known as the omega-3 and omega-6 good fats we find in flaxseeds, fish, nuts and seeds, actually are essential. Good fats sustain the body’s metabolic rate. The higher our rate of metabolism, the more calories we expend doing standard everyday activities.
Indigestion. When you don’t digest the food you eat, that food will get stored as fat. Indigestion is a basic culprit in weight gain, especially for those who eat a healthy diet.
Allergies to foods. There are internal side effects that can directly and indirectly promote the appearance of weight gain. Bloating and swelling in the digestive system does not affect fat production, but it will add inches to your waist.
Overproduction of insulin. A little known disease that affects 25% of the population, insulin resistance makes the body produce too much insulin when we eat. Since the production of insulin tells the body to metabolize glucose in the blood instead of fat, too much insulin will cause storage of fat, even when the fat might otherwise be used for energy.
Hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland is highly involved in regulating our metabolism, which is the pace at which our body metabolizes calories. If you have a thyroid imbalance, your metabolism could be adversely affected.
