Sydney Botulinum injections (B.tox for short) has become popular amongst Sydney’s stylish crowd and these days it has become an integral part of grooming for those in the Harbour City. Nonetheless I never cease to be stunned by the stories in connection with this uncomplicated procedure. Below are a selection of the common mistakes that I hear day in day out in my work as a physician at Star Cosmetic Medicine in Pyrmont, Sydney.

Delusion no. 1: I might not be able to express emotion normally!

There are 60 or so muscles in the human face. The continued use of these muscles can cause wrinkles to form. The overuse of B.tox have the effect of the facial musculature appearing over relaxed. The quantity injected by nearly all physicians result in you looking refreshed, nevertheless you will maintain your facial expression.

Indeed a carefully calculated dosage of B.tox in the appropriate place means an expressive face is retained whilst any fine lines are reduced.

Delusion no. 2: B.tox is a toxin!
This to a small extent is correct. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the proper pharmacological terminology. An overdose may result in loss of muscle tone and may even cause sickness.

Pharmacists have an old saying ‘everything is a poison - it all depends on the dose’. A large quantity of any medicine will cause illness. Water can kill you if too much is taken.

Delusion no. 3: It will sting!
At Star Cosmetic Medicine the doctor utilises needles smaller than human hair. A lot of patients have said that the treatments aren’t as painful as a mosquito bite. Definitely not as painful as getting a regular shot.

Delusion no. 4: My face will feel numb!
Untrue. B.tox works on the neuromuscular junction, not the nerves of sensation. Just the ability to relax muscles is affected by B.tox.

Delusion no. 5. You must keep having B.tox otherwise you may wrinkle quicker than before!
This is also wrong.

The first set of injections is effective for around three months. Subsequent injections do last a little longer. Eventually as muscle strength returns to normal - the lines will reappear little by little. However they will not be worse than before the treatment began.

In fact the lines will more often than not be softer than if you had never had B.tox treatment - even should you never continue the injections. This, of course is generally the case because your facial muscles and skin have had a rest during the therapy.
