Sensible Straight Draws

Completing a straight in online poker is a powerful hand that often wins the pot. However some straight draws are better than others. There are straight board textures that are also dangerous and which you should always be wary about calling when you are on a poker online draw. It is sometimes unwise to call a bet for a straight poker draw when your outs are for the low end (known as the “ignorant” end) of a straight. For instance, the when board holds 9-J-10, you want to be holding the Queen rather than the 8, especially if the pot is raised ahead of you. Sometimes the low straight does win, but when there are three connected cards on board and you hold only the low end, be judicious about calling any bet. Recognize that you might already be drawing dead against the higher straight. With no bet ahead of you, you could get a free card that completes your ignorant end straight, but again you must analyze your opponent’s play up until that point to see if you are up against a hand with cards that complete the higher straight. Go slowly with ignorant end straight draws. Your hand could be a winner, but is definitely not the nuts. Be prepared to release it if you get raised.
