Harry Potter Franchise Is Winding down at Last
Where were you when you first read a Harry Potter book? How old were you when you saw your first Harry Potter movie? J.K. Rowling’s stories have defined the imagination of a generation in a way like no author before her. Not only did Rowling rise from obscurity with a blockbuster novel, she went on to dominate the modern fantasy literature and movie markets.
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part Two” — scheduled for release in June 2011 — is expected to be the last movie in the series, although the author says she may write more books in the Harry Potter world. But even if she introduces a new generation of fans to a grown-up Harry, will Daniel Radcliff want to reprise the role that made him famous in 5-10 years? Although many actors have appeared in all the films (notably Dame Maggie Smith, who plays Professor McGonagall and Julie Walter, who plays Ron Weasley’s mother) the movies are really about the three friends who grow up sharing a bond greater than any evil that Lord Voldemort and his minions can muster.
The stories have been wrongly criticized by fundamentalist groups that have neglected to read them. Instead of portraying children who are seduced by the devil into using forbidden magic, Harry and his friends are using natural, God-given talents they were born with. One might as well ask the sighted to stop using their eyes, for sight is surely a “magical” ability when you stop to think about it. Potter and his friends must learn about the difference between good and evil, and they have to take responsibility for their actions. There are consequences for everything in Harry Potter’s world and he is not entirely innocent. But he is wise with the innocence of youth and when he walks a path similar to that chosen by Lord Voldemort as a child, Harry wisely makes better choices.
The Internet is filled with Websites hawking Harry Potter merchandise and there are dozens of Harry Potter fan sites and forums where readers of the books and viewers of the movies mingle and share their thoughts about the characters and the stories. Sage scholars debate whether Harry Potter will last as long as The Lord of the Rings. But when all else is said and done there remains only one fact: millions of people have enjoyed the Harry Potter saga. It is a modern epic that has been imitated but not rivalled in its own time, and it is doubtful there shall be anything like it for years to come.
Whatever your preference among the movies, you will surely feel a twinge of sadness when you watch the final film for the first time. It won’t be the last, that is for sure. Even though we know how the story turns out we still will have to get one final fix of Harry, Ron, and Hermione — and of old Hagrid the half-giant. That day is coming. In fact, it’s not much more than a year away. Are you prepared to say good-bye to Harry Potter? Are you ready to grow up and return to the Muggle World?
