Placebo Effect Is Not Just Psychological

Patients who believe in the effectiveness of their pain
medication will experience greater pain relief, finds a
University of Michigan study published in the Journal of
Neuroscience. Just thinking that a medicine will relieve pain is
enough to prompt the brain to release its own natural
painkillers, results indicate.

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, provides
the first concrete evidence that endorphins, the brain’s own
pain-fighting chemicals, play a direct role in the phenomenon
known as the “placebo effect.”

Endorphins behave similarly to opiate drugs, such as heroin and
morphine. They bind to receptors and stop the transmission of
pain signals along the nerve pathways. Previous studies have
shown that the brain responds physically during the placebo
effect, but the new study is the first to pinpoint a specific
mechanism that triggers the brain’s physical response.

“This deals another serious blow to the idea that the placebo
effect is a purely psychological, not physical, phenomenon,”
says lead author Jon-Kar Zubieta, MD, PhD, associate professor
of psychiatry and radiology at the U-M Medical School and
associate research scientist at the Molecular and Behavioral
Neurosciences Institute.

The study involved 14 young men who agreed to allow researchers
to inject their jaw muscles with a concentrated salt-water
solution to induce pain. Brain scans were performed on the
subjects to monitor the activity of their brains’ natural
painkilling endorphins during the process.

Mind-Body Connection Clear

During one scan, they were told they would receive a medicine
(in fact, a placebo) that might relieve pain. Subjects reported
a lessening of pain after receiving the placebo, and brain scans
indicated increased endorphin activity in four areas of the
brain known to be involved in the response to, and processing
of, pain.

Every fifteen seconds, the subjects were asked to rate the
intensity of their pain on a scale of 0 to 100. After each scan,
the researchers asked the participants more questions about
their mood, emotions and other aspects of how they felt during
the scans.

There were significant differences between ratings given by
participants after the scan in which they received the placebo
compared to the scan during which they received the jaw
injection alone.

“We were able to see that the endorphin system was activated in
pain-related areas of the brain and that activity increased when
someone was told they were receiving a medicine to ease their
pain. They then reported feeling less pain. The mind-body
connection is quite clear,” reports Zubieta.

Suggestion Triggers Endorphin Release

Another scan was performed in which subjects were administered
additional placebo prior to increased pain-induction to discern
whether endorphin activity could be stimulated solely by
suggestion.

As additional placebo was administered, endorphin activity
increased. Researchers then had to increase the amount of
salt-water in order to maintain the subjects’ pain levels, which
they did without their knowledge.

Two-thirds of the study participants were classified as “high
placebo responders,” experiencing significant endorphin activity
through the power of suggestion. This helps explain why so many
people report relief after receiving therapies and remedies that
provide no actual physical benefit.

This new information may lead to better use of cognitive, or
psychological, therapy for people with chronic pain, the authors
suggest.

Researchers used positron emission tomography (PET) scans to
determine exactly which part of the brain the endorphin activity
originated from, cross-registering them with magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) scans for the purposes of accuracy.

Benefits of Garudasana

‘Garuda’ means eagle and ‘asana’ means pose. Garuda known as
king birds also happen to be the vehicle of Vishnu. Even though
most of the yoga poses aims towards balance and tranquility, by
the look of the asana it will be more visible. This asana would
help in loosening up your joints. Stretching your muscles would
help in making all the parts of your body more fit.

While doing the asana sense of balance would be achieved as you
are standing on one foot. It would look similar to you being
wrapped by yourself. As this is a standing pose many beginners
do not happen to find the right balance, for this they can use
the wall to support the back. This can be done with different
variations and can be very challenging. You should consult your
doctor before doing any of the yoga poses. Even though these are
very beneficial it would depend upon your body whether you can
manage these asanas.

Even though this may look like a difficult asana but by
regularly doing it you may master it and would be able to reap
its benefits. The key for all the asanas is that you have to
remain in that pose for at least 15 to 30 seconds which would be
more beneficial for you. The key areas which this asana focuses
are the ankles, calves, thighs, hips and shoulders.

The benefit which you can get from this asana is the
strengthening and stretching of you ankles and calves. These
areas which may be neglected would be treated well by this
asana. The stretch would help your thighs, hips, shoulders and
upper back. The pull which is created in this asana would help
making you more relaxed. So when you are relaxed the level of
concentration also improves as you are also keeping a check on
your breathing while doing this exercise. There is balance all
over your mind body and soul which keeps you always in check for
the better things in life.

How To Build Your Own Sauna

Filed under: Templates Hub — admin at 2:52 am on Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Have you ever wanted to build your own sauna, but the thought of it was too daunting? Well believe it or not, the instructions are relatively easy to follow - and you can save yourself up to half of what a ready-build sauna would cost you. But saving money is not the only reason to learn how to build a sauna- there is also the reward of accomplishment that comes with taking on such a task, not to mention how impressive it is to do so.

When you do choose to build, the first thing you have to decide on before you shop for supplies is size. Believe it or not, some companies offer a kit where you can build your own sauna right in your apartment or condo bathroom! Of course, your landlord may not approve an apartment-build sauna, so it is more likely you would buy supplies or a kit for a separate area from your home.

If you own your home and build your own sauna, you will likely construct what is called a sauna cottage. If you buy a kit with all the materials, the only other things besides tools that you will need is a reputable book. Believe it or not, most kits don’t come with one!

You will have to buy all the wood and other materials yourself to build sauna rooms successfully. You will need enough wood for the cabin itself and for the benches, as many as you desire to have. You will also have to buy either a heater or collect rocks that are smooth and big enough to conduct their own heat and use those. Either way, the most important purchase is the wood- because you can’t use just any wood.

The wood you use to build your own sauna will determine your overall success. You must use a wood that won’t warp with moisture, such as knotty cedar or spruce, or moisture-resistant pine. Your benches should be made with a wood such as spruce or abachi. But of course the most important thing on your list it to make sure you get a book that explains how to build your own sauna so that you can put it all together.

Once you have the raw materials, then you need to get all the little things out of the way in order to build sauna baths effectively. For instance, you can’t just have a dark room- you need light. Deciding on cosmetic things such as light fixtures, doorway decorations and the like don’t seem all that important, but they are. You must make a blueprint of some sort and decide these things in advance- refer to your sauna-building book for details. Once you have decided all the little things and have your materials in hand, you will find out just how enjoyable and rewarding building your own sauna from scratch can be - not to mention the joy of bathing in it once it’s completed.

(UTS) How Stops Help You To Make Money In The Stock Market

Filed under: Templates Hub — admin at 11:37 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008

To make money in the stock market, setting stops is an imprecise
science and involves a lot of trial and error, but it is an
integral part of being a successful trader. A good analogy is to
compare stops to buying insurance for your business. Should you
avoid insurance altogether just because you’re not sure exactly
how much you need, or because it will cost you a little money?
No. Instead, you estimate and do the best you can, and in the
end it will be well worth the effort.

Where insurance limits risk of loss through disasters, stops
limit your risk of loss on bad trades. Stops make it possible to
take small losses and get out when a stock goes against you,
protecting your capital. Yet, some traders find that they are
unwilling to take a loss on any stock. They don’t want to admit
that they made a mistake.

Another key to make money in the stock market, what often
separates a good trader from a bad one is the ability to take
small losses. Your goal, as a successful trader, is to take
small losses and make big gains. If you do this, you’ll be
profitable. But, you ask, what if you stop out of a stock you
still want to trade? Well, you can always buy it back later, and
likely at a better price, if the trade still has potential.

Besides limiting risk and helping you take small losses, stops
are valuable because they protect profits on winning trades. As
I discussed in a previous article, you must lock in your profit
when you trade, or you can lose it. You can ensure that you keep
your profits by using trailing stops. A trailing stop is a stop
order you place below the current price of a long position,
progressively moving it up as the price of the position
increases so that the stop follows the position up. For a short
position, to make money in the stock market you set a stop above
the current price and then move it progressively down, following
the position as it trends downward.

This means that once you have a profit, you move your stop
nearer to the current price so you’ll stop out with most of your
profits intact if the position moves against you. If the stop
executes and you decide you want to trade the position again,
you can buy it back at a better price than you sold it for and
then ride it up again. That’s how a good trader makes and keeps
money, make money in the stock market by taking small profits
multiple times, rather than risking too much waiting for a big
win.
