Where’s Jan

My friend, Lil and I couldn’t help but congratulate ourselves for making the right choice as we stood in front of the artistic Gallery Inn in Puerto Rico. We had got what we were looking for. An all-inclusive resort with hordes of guests did not really appeal to us; instead what we wanted was a quiet place that reminded us of the times we spent in San Juan. Well the artistic Gallery Inn was exactly what we were looking for.

Culture and history oozed out of the artistic Gallery Inn and we were both left gasping for breadth at all the ancient stuff we found there. Historic furniture, paintings and sculptures which were old and rustic adorned the place. What surprised us the most was the welcome we received. There were four parrots perched at the entrance that kept saying hello and greeting us. It was quite shocking and thrilling at the same time.

The parrots were not the only surprises at the artistic Gallery Inn. There were some fantastic views from the inn. A cobbled pathway led to our room. Our room was absolutely stunning and as good as the rest of the inn.

Jan D’Esopo was the owner of the inn and Lil was dying to meet her. She was an artist whose work we had heard about and Lil thought that she was some celebrity she had to meet. As we walked towards the restaurant Lil was happy to see Jan having a meal in there. She thought that it was great and she went across to introduce herself. Jan didn’t respond as expected and was very cold towards Lil. Lil tried her level best to start a conversation and gave up after 15 minutes. She excused herself, a bit disappointed and joined me at my table.

Jan was happy that she had met Jan, but at the same time was disappointed that she had not responded to her. Later we found out from the staff that Jan had gone out of town and the woman Lil chatted with was someone who looked like Jan. Lil was a bit disappointed and felt betrayed. Whenever we met the fake Jan at the artistic Gallery Inn she gave us a funny smile.

Partly Due to the down Turn Many Ski Companies Will Be Cutting down Their Number of Catered Chalets

Filed under: Living In Leisure, Web Of Travel — admin at 3:06 am on Saturday, August 8, 2009

In light of the recession snowboarding sales lowered this season.

This is even with strong early season holiday reservations and first class snow conditions.

This reduction in vacationers follows six years of sequential growth in the ski industry, and the numbers came down from one million in 2008 to 950000 last ski season.

This is partly due to vacationers giving the season a miss, whilst additional snowboarders who would generally take two or more snowboarding holidays, only had one.

A fall of 15% was felt by the independent travel sector and some no frills airlines slashing the amount of airplanes to several cities.

Some ski holiday package operators also saw the reservations going down by about the same amount.

Even so, the top tour operators market share rested at a healthy 73% and the Alps in France remained the most popular destination with around 37% of skiing holidays.

Because of this several operators cut the amount of luxury chalets they run this year.

Luxury catered chalets will surely see a drop in holiday makers as a catered ski chalet costs the operator more in terms of chalet chefs and lease when it is unoccupied.

It seems unlikely we shall witness the last minute deals which were on the market this season.

Prices are in all likelihood to go up, prices probably won’t increase much.

The Ride

Filed under: Adventures, Bikes and Tours, Web Of Travel — admin at 11:22 am on Friday, August 7, 2009

It?s been an glorious summer so far. Last day we went on a mtn bike ride through the Sequoias. It was an glorious trip, but began with the exhausting drive. I had my mtn bike on the back of the car and equipment all packed up the night before. I left work early Thursday and started the drive alone. I was on a race against time as I was supposed to meet my buddies at the top of the mountain road, marked by a picnic table, at 8pm. I had to make the timing just right otherwise I would not meet them. After that time, they were to expect that I got held up and would try again at the same spot at 10am the next day. This means if I was too late, I would end up sleeping in my car alone that night.

Turns out I made it through traffic and up the hill in time to unhook my bike, crack open a beer and ride up and down a couple of little hills before dark and before my buddies would arrive. The air was crisp and I was excited to be away from the city. The bike was in perfect shape and ready to hit some trails.

We began our ride the next morning, each if us carrying 40lb packs ensuring enough food and water to last at least 12hrs of long hard riding. The first hill was killer and was a rude awakening to a very long mtn bike ride. The crew cranked slowly up for about 2hrs. It was a remarkable feeling to finally make it to the top. We took a break and sipped some water from our stainless steel water bottles.

The next 8hrs was spent jamming up and down hills, over fallen logs, off huge hits and hucking over big rocks. A couple of breaks were in order throughout the day where we drank a bit of booze and shared treats we had packed away. The dirt was just right. Not too dry as to cause any dust and not too wet that our wheels would get stuck. It was nice to see just a bit of snow left on the ground in certain spots.
